The American Optometric Association recommends an eye exam before 12 months old, at 3 years old, at 5 years old, and as recommended by your eye care professional.
A no-cost program that has been designed by the American Optometric Association, called InfantSee, provides a comprehensive eye assessment to infants between the ages of 6 months and 1 year old. This assessment is designed to detect potential problems that may lead to learning and developmental problems if left untreated (according to the American Optometric Association, 1 in 10 children are at risk for undetected vision problems).
The InfantSee exam is meant to be a complement to the eye screening performed at a pediatric well-child visit, since many risk factors for eye problems such as amblyopia (sometimes called lazy eye), muscle imbalance, and ocular diseases may not be detected at that type of visit.
During the InfantSee exam, the eye-care professional will check visual acuity, (how well your baby can see), eye alignment and motility (how well your baby’s eyes are lined up and move), binocularity (how well your baby’s eye work together), and overall eye health.
