Keep Kids Reading All Summer Long!

Summer is the perfect time to slow down, explore new adventures, and discover the joy of reading together. Whether it’s a favorite bedtime story, a visit to the library, or reading under a shady tree, every book helps build language, imagination, and a lifelong love of learning.

To help families make the most of summer, here are two great ways to keep young readers engaged.

Join Potter’s Summer Reading Club

Make reading part of your family’s summer routine with Potter’s Summer Reading Club!

Getting started is easy:

  • Download and print the Summer Reading Log.
  • Track the books you read together with your child.
  • Submit your completed log through our website.
  • Receive a special gift from Potter the Otter™ to celebrate your child’s reading accomplishments.

It’s a fun way to encourage daily reading while creating special moments together.

Free Monthly Books for Children Under 5

Families with children under 5 years old in Santa Clara County are eligible to receive one free book every month through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, a collaboration with the Santa Clara County Library District.

The program mails high quality, age appropriate books directly to enrolled children from birth until their fifth birthday at no cost to families.

If you have a child under 5, register today at SCCLD.org/ImaginationLibrary.

FIRST 5 Santa Clara County is not affiliated with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. We’re simply sharing this wonderful resource because we believe every child deserves access to books and the opportunity to develop a lifelong love of reading.

Help Us Spread the Word

We created a free, shareable Summer Reading flyer that highlights both Potter’s Summer Reading Club and the free book program through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.

We invite you to download it and share it with your family, friends, neighbors, child care providers, schools, community organizations, faith communities, and social media networks. A simple share could help connect another family with free books and reading opportunities this summer.

Download the flyer and help us inspire more young readers!

Every Book Makes a Difference

Reading together doesn’t have to take hours. Even 15 to 20 minutes a day helps build vocabulary, strengthens family connections, and prepares children for success in school and beyond.

However you choose to read this summer, we hope you’ll make books part of your family’s everyday adventures. Happy reading! 📚💙
