One Small Thing Can Make a Big Difference for a New Mom
Conversations about postpartum depression and maternal mental health are growing and they’re shining an important light on a period of motherhood that can be deeply vulnerable, yet too often goes unseen.
The postpartum period, which extends up to a year after childbirth, can bring tremendous joy, but it can also be physically and emotionally challenging. New mothers may be recovering from childbirth, adjusting to caring for a baby, navigating sleep deprivation and experiencing significant hormonal and emotional changes often while the support and attention they received during pregnancy begin to fade.
In California, 62% of pregnancy-related deaths occur after a mother leaves the hospital. It is a powerful reminder that caring for moms cannot end at delivery.
Maternal mental health conditions, including postpartum depression and anxiety, are also common and can affect mothers across every background and circumstance. Yet stigma, isolation and a lack of awareness can make it difficult for someone to recognize that they need help or to ask for it.
Small Acts Can Make a Big Difference
Supporting maternal health does not always require a grand gesture. Sometimes it looks like dropping off dinner. Watching the baby so a mom can shower or rest. Offering a ride to an appointment. Sending a text that says, “How are you doing?” and taking the time to really listen to the answer.
These everyday acts of care can help a new mother feel less alone. They also create opportunities for friends, family members and community members to notice when someone may be struggling and encourage her to seek additional support.
At FIRST 5 Santa Clara County, we believe supporting young children means supporting the people who care for them. Babies thrive when their parents and caregivers have the relationships, resources and support they need to thrive, too.
One Small Thing reminds us that maternal health is not only a mother’s responsibility. We all have a role to play.

Let’s Keep Talking About Maternal Mental Health
The growing conversation around postpartum depression is important. But awareness should be the beginning, not the end.
We can help create communities where mothers don’t have to struggle silently, where asking for help is met with compassion, and where support continues long after a baby is born.
It doesn’t have to be complicated.
Check in. Show up. Bring dinner. Hold the baby. Listen.
One small thing may feel small to you. To a new mom who needs support, it could mean so much more.
