An Update on Federal Funding for Children and Families in Santa Clara County

You may have heard concerns about potential federal budget cuts that could affect programs supporting children and families in Santa Clara County. We want to share a clear and reassuring update.

Recently, the federal government attempted to pause funding for several long-standing programs that help families meet basic needs, including child care assistance, CalWORKs (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families), and social services grants. These programs support parents staying at work or in school and help young children grow and thrive.

The good news: this funding pause is not moving forward right now. California Attorney General Rob Bonta secured a temporary court order that blocks the freeze while the issue is reviewed. As a result, services for children and families in Santa Clara County continue.

This decision provides important stability. Even brief disruptions to child care, food access, or family supports can have lasting impacts on children’s health and development. These programs play a critical role in reducing stress for families, keeping children safe and housed, and supporting a strong local workforce.

State and local leaders are actively monitoring the situation and advocating for solutions that prioritize children’s well-being. While the legal process continues, families can feel reassured that California is taking action to protect these vital supports. FIRST 5 Santa Clara County remains committed to keeping families informed and to standing firm for the health, stability, and future of children in our community.
