The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) are investigating a multi-state outbreak of infant botulism that may be linked to Nara Organics Whole Milk Organic Powdered Infant Formula.
So far, four infants in California, Pennsylvania, and Washington have been diagnosed with infant botulism. Health officials report that all four infants had consumed Nara Organics Whole Milk Organic Powdered Infant Formula. The FDA writes,”Nara Organics Powdered Infant Formula was distributed nationally across Target retail stores, Target.com, and Nara.com between July 2025 and June 2026.
Infant botulism is a rare but serious illness caused by bacteria that can produce toxins in a baby’s intestines. Symptoms may include constipation, weak crying, poor feeding, decreased movement, drooping eyelids, and difficulty breathing. Parents and caregivers should contact a healthcare provider immediately if they notice any of these symptoms in an infant.
As part of the investigation, the FDA has collected unopened cans of formula from the same lots consumed by the affected infants and is currently testing them. Results are expected in the coming weeks.
The California Department of Public Health has also tested formula from the homes of affected families. In one opened can of Nara Organics powdered infant formula, laboratory testing detected Clostridium botulinum, the bacteria that can cause infant botulism. Additional testing is underway to determine whether unopened products from the same lot are affected.
At this time, health officials are continuing their investigation and working with the manufacturer to determine the source of the contamination and whether any other products may be impacted.
