Thousands of community members gathered this month for the African American Community Service Agency’s (AACSA) 45th Annual Juneteenth in the Streets Festival, a vibrant celebration of freedom, culture, education, and community.
As a FIRST 5 Santa Clara County grantee, AACSA has long been a trusted leader in supporting Black families and strengthening communities throughout Santa Clara County. This year’s festival welcomed more than 6,000 attendees from across the Bay Area for a day filled with music, learning, connection, and celebration.
The festival featured performances by SWV, Montell Jordan, and AYO, along with economic empowerment and higher education panels, financial literacy resources, local vendors, and opportunities for community members of all ages to connect and engage. More than 100 vendors and small businesses participated, and elected leaders from throughout the region joined in celebrating the occasion.
Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865—the day enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. Today, Juneteenth is recognized as a federal holiday and serves as an opportunity to reflect on our nation’s history, celebrate Black culture and achievements, and recommit ourselves to creating more equitable communities.
Community celebrations like Juneteenth in the Streets are especially meaningful for children and families. They create opportunities to connect across generations, honor cultural traditions, build a sense of belonging, and celebrate the strength and resilience of the community.
FIRST 5 Santa Clara County was proud to participate in this year’s event. Families stopped by to meet Potter the Otter, who shared books, smiles, and high-fives with children throughout the day. Watching young children engage with books while surrounded by music, culture, and community was a reminder that every child deserves opportunities to learn, grow, and feel connected to their community.
We are grateful to AACSA for hosting this important annual tradition and for their ongoing work to uplift families and advance opportunities for future generations. Events like Juneteenth in the Streets demonstrate the power of community coming together to celebrate history, inspire hope, and invest in the well-being of children and families.
Congratulations to AACSA on another successful Juneteenth celebration, and thank you to the thousands of attendees, volunteers, performers, vendors, and community partners who made the day possible.
