Last week, a federal budget bill was signed that will significantly reduce funding for Medicaid and SNAP—two vital programs that millions of families rely on for healthcare and nutrition. These cuts threaten to undermine the health and well-being of our most vulnerable children and families, with far-reaching and lasting consequences.
Here in Santa Clara County, 31,407 children ages 0–5 are eligible for Medicaid (or Medi-Cal in California). That’s more than one third of our youngest residents—babies, toddlers, and preschoolers—who depend on this care for well-child visits, immunizations, developmental screenings, and so much more. It’s also the program that supports pregnant people and new parents during one of the most vulnerable and important times in life.
SNAP (known as CalFresh in California) is a critical source of nutrition, stability, and hope for families struggling to put healthy meals on the table. These supports fuel children’s brain development, physical health, and ability to thrive. Participation in Santa Clara County is at its highest level in over a decade, with more than 130,000 individuals receiving food assistance.
At FIRST 5 Santa Clara County, we remain steadfast in our commitment to protect and support the families we serve. Now more than ever, we are dedicated to:
- Protecting what matters most by advocating for continued access to health care, food assistance, and the care young children need.
- Working alongside community partners to ensure families continue to receive resources, services, and support during this time of uncertainty.
- Investing in neighborhood Family Resource Centers that connect families to healthcare, support, and parenting resources.
To every parent, caregiver, and community partner: We are here. We are listening. And we stand with you. Our mission is clear: to ensure every child has the care and support they need to grow up healthy, safe, and ready to thrive.
With care and commitment,
Jennifer Kelleher Cloyd
